The Clockwork Phoenix 5 launch party at NYRSF was an unqualified success. Thanks again to Mike Allen, Jim Freund and the rest of the team. This was the first time I'd read my story in front of an audience.According to my plants in the crowd, I sounded pretty good on the mic. So I will continue my rigorous regimen of a beer a night while laying lazy Buddha style in bed (all true).
I owe two thank yous for my successful reading, one to Marcy Arlin, another to Delia Sherman. Marcy, a stage director with decades of experience, ran a reading workshop for the BSFW. There, I learned how to pace myself and change my voice for the characters without falling into the trap of overacting.
Delia's input was a single clarifying sentence. "Remember that you are in love with the words." Which is true. It is one of the reasons I write. So, during rehearsals and while on stage, I focused on each syllable, trying to give each one its due time on my tongue. It seems to have worked.
